Red Russian Kale, Brassica oleracea L.

Bluish-grey leaves and embossed purple veins and stems, Red Russian Kale is perfect for mesclun mixes. For continual harvest you can start harvesting when they reach 5cm tall and new leaves will continue to grow. A natural ‘super food’, it can be harvested anytime as matured plants can withstand temperatures of -12 (10F) and below. Seeds can be sown directly once the soil is worked or start 4-6 weeks prior to the planting date. Sow the seeds 1/4in (0.6cm) deep inside fertile, well drained soil preferably rich in organic matter. For full size sow roughly 3 seeds every 8-10in (20-25cm), thinning to 8-10in (20-25cm). Row spacing of 18-30in (46-76cm). Water regularly to keep the soil moist (not soggy!). Warm, bright location with plenty of sunlight. 50 days to full maturity.
